A Prayer for Drunkards Lord, You have created the highest purpose for fermented beverages in the transmutation of wine into blood and left it to men of Earth to pursue, through alcohol, paths less noble. I hail from a family of drunkards, so I speak with authority on this matter. Lord, pacify those who are driven to drink, for, faced with an unfathomable expanse of afternoon, they seek only a means by which the numbered hours of their lives can be rendered harmless. O Lord, Creator of vine and vineyard, accept this prayer on behalf of dipsomaniacs everywhere. I ask not that You temper their thirst. Instead, obstinately I ask again only for the impossible: the complete remaking of the universe in a fashion such that one finds no solace in drowning. |
