Notes on the Table:

  • The spelling of the names and the translation of the nicknames is taken from Sydney Shapiro's translation, "Outlaws of the Marsh". In some cases, this translation is not consistent. For example Zhou Tung becomes Zhou Tong after Chapter 70.

  • Characters are listed in the order in which their name first appears in the novel. In some cases, this is only as a reference to and not an actual appearance of the character.

  • In the chapters appearing column of the table of outlaws, an outlaw is listed only if he played a distinct role in the chapter. Chapters that describe battles in which dozens of outlaws participated do not list each outlaw individually, unless the outlaw particularly distinguished himself.

  • In the column that designates outlaws as either one of the 36 Stars of Heavenly Spirits or one of the 72 Stars of Earthly Fiends, the distinction is taken from Pearl S. Buck's All Men Are Brothers. There is no definitive list in the text of Outlaws of the Marsh, which says these 36 were Heavenly Spirits and these 72 were Earthly Fiends.

  • Although Chao Gai is a leader of the outlaws, he is not numbered among the 108.

  • Although Song Qing, the brother of Song Jiang, never formally joins the outlaws, does not have a nickname, and never distinguishes himself in battle, he is numbered among the 108.

  • In dividing characters into the "Allies" and "Enemies" of the outlaws, I decided that servants of the empire were enemies before the outlaws were amnestied (in Chapter 82), like Marshal Gao, and servants of the empire that appeared after this point, like Zhao Anfu, were allies.

Sagacious Lu the Tattooed Monk rescues "Panther Head" Lin Chong from the government guards who have been bribed by Marshal Gao to kill their prisoner.
